The Big Wave: Of the entire U.S.population, 27% will turn 60-65 over the next 20 years. 4.3 million people turned 50 in 2007. For the next 15 years one boomer will turn 60 every 7.5 seconds. Approximately 1/3 of the population range from financially secure to financially independent; about one half of that third qualify as wealthy. Boomers will also inherit 7.2 trillion over the next 35-45 years. Educated and affluent boomers in are re-inventing their lives, re-wiring instead of retiring. Merrill Lynch’s New Retirement Survey claim that 81% of boomers plan to work well past the age of 65. The recent drop in the economy is making that a more necessary choice than ever before

The Brain of a Mindful Communicator is focused, flexible, alert, able to sustain attention, spontaneous but not impulsive, able to swiftly process and recall information, thoughtful and calm.

The average adult spends more time maintaining their car or their house than maintaining their brain. The fact is, is that without a highly functioning brain, we put the car, the house and the quality of our lives at risk.

As our brains age we can expect to:
1) reduce in information processing operating speed,
2) become more distractible, and
3) have more trouble remembering what was said or what we saw.

These declines can create stress, moodiness, a lack of confidence; they can affect people’s desire to be around you.

The good news is that recent research
suggests that we can prevent and, to some extent, reverse these changes by some regular practice and training. Neuroplasticity is the ability of the synapses or connection points between brain cells to re-shape themselves. Neurogenesis, the creation of new neurons or brain cells, is an on-going process at any age. The brain can respond to the demands we place on it. To make this happen we need to challenge our brain beyond our regular routine. Crossword puzzles and Suduko are better than nothing, but there are more efficient and measurable ways to “sharpen the saw.” Work harder? No. Work smarter:

The 5 Pillars of Brain Health:
Physical  exercise particularly first  thing in the morning or before we sit down to do a project can also help sharpen your brain: physical exercise enhances neurogenesis.
Balanced diet – A diet rich in Omega-3 oils, seafood,  dark green leafy vegetables, protein, dark berries, spices( tumeric, rosemary and sage), coffee, eggs, avocados, nuts, seeds and wine( in moderation).
