Mindful Listening:
A Prescription for Better Outcomes, Happier Patients and Getting Home by 6:00

Course Summary

In healthcare today, the constraints of time, higher productivity demands and “touch-tone triage” leave in their wake dissatisfied patients and frustrated health care providers. Creating positive relationships within the health care environment between medical personnel and patients is key to bolstering morale, minimizing burnout and malpractice suits. Merely posting mission statement for respectful and caring attitudes toward patients and co-workers is not enough. What’s needed is a different mindset for connecting with one another. Mindful Listening helps us work with today’s health care environment instead of against it. Rebecca Shafir, speech pathologist, and author of The Zen of Listening: Mindful Communication in the Age of Distraction gives practical ways to:

  •  make people feel heard, valued and respected in less than 60 seconds
  •  empower the patient to make the most of every visit
  •  welcome the difficult patients
  •  become comfortable with silence
  •  build teamwork within an institution
  •  listen to ourselves as others hear us
  •  improve one’s health through mindful listening
